DEEP BLUE

What’s Deep Blue?

Deep Blue is a synergistic blend of eight essential oils that offer cooling comfort to desired areas: Blue (German) Chamomile, Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Blue Tansy, and Osmanthus.

The Deep Blue Stick is a topical analgesic infused with Deep Blue Soothing Blend. It also contains Copaiba essential oil and menthol—an active ingredient at 10%. The Deep Blue Stick provides natural, powerful relief in a fast-acting solid that’s perfect for temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles, arthritis, sprains, strains, and bruises. The base of the Deep Blue Stick is a combination of moisturizing emollients like coconut oil, sunflower seed wax, and sweet almond oil, which leave your skin soft and non-greasy.

Why Deep Blue?

Methyl salicylate is the primary chemical constituent in Wintergreen essential oil. It can be soothing for fatigued areas. In fact, many over-the-counter ointments and soothing salves contain methyl salicylate as an active ingredient.

How Do I Use Deep Blue?

Topically: Deep Blue is a powerful, potent essential oil blend. To use it topically, dilute it in a carrier oil like Fractionated Coconut Oil and rub into targeted areas: the neck, back, legs, feet, or shoulders. You’ll experience an intense warming and cooling sensation that comforts

and soothes. After applying, wash your hands so you don’t accidentally get any leftover product on or in sensitive areas of the body.

Diluting Deep Blue not only helps avoid skin sensitivity, but it actually makes the blend more effective! When you dilute essential oils in a carrier oil and apply them topically, they don’t evaporate off the skin as quickly, meaning you absorb more.

The first time you use Deep Blue, try it on a small area of your skin to see how it feels. If it’s too powerful for your liking, add more carrier oil the next time you apply it. If it isn’t powerful enough, use less carrier oil next time.

The power of Deep Blue Soothing Blend has proven itself repeatedly, but when you’re out and about or in a rush and don’t have the time to clean up from a Deep Blue application, what are your options? With the Deep Blue Stick, you have the powerful Soothing Blend wherever and whenever you need it, but without any handwashing or cleanup required.

When Should I Use Deep Blue?

Whenever you need comfort, turn to Deep Blue. Use it after a day of heavy lifting, yard work, or moving. You can also massage it—diluted with Fractionated Coconut Oil—onto kids’ legs before bed.

Either before or after working out, apply it to your back, knees, and shoulders. You could also rub it on your feet after a long hike or run.

Another effective time for Deep Blue is before or after special events. Whether it’s standing all day for a wedding, presenting at a work conference, or competing in the big game, this essential oil blend brings soothing comfort to your feet and muscles.

Imagine the convenience of the Deep Blue Stick at the gym, on a hike, at your bedside, on your desk at work, or at any number of places! The minor aches and pains of muscles and joints, bruises, and sprains don’t wait until you’re ready. Picture pulling the lid off, using the stick, and moving on with your day—no cleanup necessary.

Where Does Deep Blue Come From?

YLANG YLANG

Ylang Ylang—one of the essential oils in Deep Blue—comes from the island of Nosy Be off the northwest coast of Madagascar. Ylang ylang trees thrive in the hot, wet climate. These trees are fast-growing. They can reach up to 40 feet high, but for ease of harvesting and increased productivity, the trees are regularly pruned and kept around 10 feet tall.

The essential oil comes from distilling the small flowers of the tree. Ylang ylang trees must grow for three to four years before harvesting, but they’ll then produce flowers for 30 years or more. When a tree is taken care of, it can produce up to 22 pounds of fresh flowers per year.

The flowers turn yellow when they’re mature and ready to harvest. Though the flowers grow year-round, the principal harvest is from April to June—just after the rainy season. The harvesters—typically women—handpick the flowers early in the morning when the blossoms are open, releasing their sweet fragrance.

The flowers need to be distilled within 24 hours of collection or else they lose their aroma, reducing essential oil yield. Distillation takes place over two days. Because of the large volume of flowers needed, the whole process requires a massive collective effort.

Growers and harvesters have historically been taken advantage of by brokers and middlemen, so we go directly to the source and ensure ylang ylang harvesters and distillers receive regular, fair compensation for their efforts. Because we’re a guaranteed buyer, growers are less likely to lose out on income from price speculation and bidding.

On top of ongoing, fair compensation, growers who produce high-quality essential oil can also earn annual bonuses for the quality of their work. These bonuses provide them with resources to help expand their production capacity. Using their bonuses to purchase new distillation machinery or add more growers to their cooperative allows for higher production volumes and better organization.

In Nosy Be, reliable healthcare can be difficult to come by. Because of this, dōTERRA Healing Hands® has helped establish a mobile health clinic. This mobile clinic travels to villages across the island.

dōTERRA Healing Hands is specifically working with 10 communities where most of the people involved with the harvesting cooperative (750–900 people) live. One person from each village is chosen as a health officer, who’s trained and provided with first aid kits and essential oils. Each health officer is taught proper uses for these resources. A doctor is also employed to work for this clinic and visits each village twice a week to see patients in their homes.

Alongside the mobile clinic, a permanent structure will be built on a Ylang Ylang essential oil distillation compound, with a regular staff to handle more serious issues. This medical dispensary will also serve as a maternity clinic.
